Advent is the season of anticipation - waiting for God to reveal His glory in His greatest gift to the world, His own Son. That He chose to partner with worldly beings is beyond our understanding – the angels leaned in to see just how this would all come about. Mary was chosen to bear God’s own son and Joseph was to be his earthly father – I am in awe of both of them in their journey of faith to bring forth this heavenly baby. “I am the Lords’s servant” was the testimony of both (Lk 1:38 & Matt 1:24).
As they walked those steps toward Bethlehem, Mary was heavy with child, and Joseph was right there with her, both of them taking risks, suffering scorn and judgement from men, but stepping out in faith and courage - a faith that still inspires us today to trust and obey all that God has laid before us.
Jesus walked the journey that we all share in life – tiny and helpless at birth and subject to the same human desires, needs, and temptations that we all have as humans, yet he was God in flesh, perfect in every way and destined to be the Savior of the world! As Mary and Joseph navigated their calling to be parents of the God child, I wonder what their anticipation was like.... Luke 2:19 tells us that “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart”.
This is the season of pondering – dwelling on this great mystery of how God pursues us and prepares a way for us even today to draw near him. How do we let God come fully into our hearts? How do we live our lives faithfully in anticipation of even greater promises to come? We celebrate this season with joy – knowing that God has come to us and is with us! Glory be to God in the highest and on earth, good will to men! Jesus came to do what only he could accomplish – to defeat the curse of death and reconcile us to God forever through his sacrificial work here on earth!
I recognize that my ability to paint is a gift from God and am grateful for the opportunity to use it to His glory! This painting is an impressionistic oil, highlighting Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem under the guiding light of the star – ponder and anticipate God’s love for you this season! Merry Christmas!
